why gut health matters

Gut health refers to the wellbeing of the entire gastrointestinal (GI) tract - a passage that snakes from your mouth to your anus - and the balance of its microorganisms, collectively known as the gut microbiome. Did you know your GI tract is around 8 meters long, its surface area would cover half a badminton court, and its home to trillions of microorganisms which weigh around 500g?

Q&A with Vinka

Yes. The speed and extent of microbiome changes depend on the degree of intervention and your own body’s ability to adapt. But good change is possible in as little as a week or two. But consistency is key. A fibre-rich diet with fermented food sustained over weeks leads to greater microbial diversity and enhances gut health. And if you can maintain a healthy diet, manage stress, and avoid microbiome disruptors such as processed foods and excessive alcohol, you will be rewarded with profound microbiome changes. Good habits over six to twelve months will allow for the development of a resilient microbial community capable of supporting immune function, reducing the risk of chronic diseases, and enhancing mental health through the gut-brain axis.
